Sinned-angel-stock Lightning Inspiration by slyshand Sinned-angel-stock Lightning Inspiration by slyshand
The contest is inspiration hosted by :iconsinned-angel-stock: and the deadline is Tomorrow...  If you haven't visited or seen any of her stock, she's fantastic, strong gestures, sensitive and powerful, and funny on occasion, go there and watch her and go through her backlog, seriously awesome stock to work with.

This animation didn't run away from me, it flew (10 hours in 2 days), I've been on overtime and weekend work for quite a while, and I'm just coming off of it after a vacation and I had in the back of my mind what I wanted to do or at least how I wanted to start, so when I perused the stock of the always badass sinned-angel-stock I picked out the major poses from this list

A few more I grabbed from her new USB stock collection* which you guys should totally go buy if they're not all sold out**

and I put them into context, and once I did, it became clear that this would be lightning, literally, and then between the stock photos and the story I was making up as I was roughing out the keys, I realized that sometimes there's the constant inspiration of what helps keep you motivated, and then there's the kind of inspiration that hits you like lightning.  Its this weird chill you get, or a moment of clarity, or just being excited to be doing what you're doing till its the only thing you're doing FOR the sake of doing it.

The constant motivation is seeing a master work, or a master's work.  I just got done with Korra Season 3 recently, and REWATCHED Avatar the Last Airbender again, and I'm still blown away by that show.  So much about it is what I want to do, and the world is so damn cool it makes me want to tell stories in it.  I love that series and world, and it drives me to make something someone else can love to the same degree some day.

And more so I want to share whatever I've learned with other people, in some degree, so I have to get better at understanding what I'm doing so I can explain why I do anything that I do.  Everything I put up here is kinda like my training under a waterfall.  I'll have another handout before the end of the month hopefully, so feedback, questions, subject matter, comments are all welcome in that regard.

The challenge here for this animation, is there are 4 layers, all of them are dependent on the initial person's poses, without doing that first I never would have been able to add hair, cloak, wings, LIGHTNING, so it makes sense right, build the foundation first, get the timing DOWN before you move onto the next thing so when you inevitably do have to tweak timing, you aren't tweaking 4 layers at once until you forgot something and demotivate yourself from the get go.

Hope everyone's projects are going well, I need a nap.

Dang, how do people get animations so smooth! Mine either look terrible or go too fast xD

well firstly you need 10,000 hours experience of drawing, learning anatomy and understanding it. then try animating.

Depending on what you want to animate, anatomy may or may not be important. I've got the gist of animating, I just don't have the right software and the patience for it xD

It's more trying to figure out how to get the right ratio of tween frames so it goes the right speed and smoothness.

Lots of practice, reading, studying, more practice, messing up a bunch, a lot more practice, re-reading, repeat as needed till you get something you don't mind sharing to a bunch of other people on the internet ^__^

Doesn't help when you have awful software xD
But yeah, I just don't have the time for that ;n;

I can tell you what I started with more than 10 years ago :)

Easytoon, its very simple, very free. It is intuitive enough that you can animate whatever you can draw, but it's not overly complicated so you aren't going to worry about color or anything like that.

Is it on PC? I can't mouse draw ;n;
I usually use a glorified phone/tablet samsung galaxy tab 3, but the screen is too tiny to really do anything fancy or quickly with more than stick figures.

It is on PC, and its really not the most efficient to draw with a mouse, I agree with that...

EXCEPT if you do pixel art. Then I'd argue that a mouse is a much better tool, and a much better program for that would be Pyxel Edit.

The version that allows you to animate is 9 dollars, and it is amazing. Its what I did these with

slyshand.deviantart.com/art/Ba…

Yeah, no phone version of any animation program has really clicked with me.

Those are really cute! xD
And yeah. Saving up for a drawing tablet, but for now I guess I'm stuck with FlipAClip and Meme animations.

just wow!!!! where ican learn more about animation, use my own drawings to move or draw it step by step motion? your animation is really beautiful, it seems a lonely angel lashed out daring anybody not to mess with her or her love ones or mourning over somebody?

Hi, I don't know why this comment didn't show up in my inbox ^__^'
BOOKS, some awesome books are, The Animator's Survival Kit which is full of stories and tons of animation information.

Drawn to Life: 20 Golden Years of Disney Master Classes Vol1 and Vol2 - this is about gesture drawing and it is super useful for regular drawings and for animation drawings :)

The story of this piece developed as it went on, and it ended up being a kind of painful awakening of lightning and after she turns into lightning she got her wings and was free :)
